I must say, I was rather disappointed with my most recent visit! I brought along my own bags only to be informed that they were "not allowed to touch my bags!" They did offer to pack my items for me, but only using their bags that come at an additional cost. Being a person with disabilities who struggles with walking and standing, I decided to use the handicap lane in hopes of receiving some assistance. To my dismay, I was left in considerable pain and tears as I packed my groceries alone without any offer of help. I understand that these strict rules are in place due to Covid regulations from their head office, but I will stick to shopping at my regular store where they have no issues with using "my bags" and even go the extra mile to assist me in loading my purchases into my vehicle! I only visited THIS particular store to explore their garden center, only to find out that it's closed.

Oh dear, the folk in Haliburton County do seem to be getting a rough deal with their pricey groceries! It's quite the trek, but heading out about an hour to the nearest Costco or Walmart can save you a good 30-40% on average. The other day, I picked up a massive salad and would you believe they were trying to charge me extra for more than 3 dressing packets! That salad definitely needed at least 5, and we prefer it lightly dressed.

Regrettably, Todd's, "Your Independent Grocer" in Haliburton falls short. I reside 40 km from this emporium. It is not a charming family-run shop. It is a colossal mega-store designed to peddle Galen Weston's Loblaws President's Choice products, and much, much more, flaunting a vast selection of produce, a butcher's area for meats, a bakery, a Deli, a pharmacy, and a section for clothing and housewares right in the center...
...in addition to "everything" one might anticipate finding in a large city supermarket.
Yet, this is not the reality here.
The meat is overpriced ($42.50 for 6 beef ribs - where it actually costs $85 for the rib meat plus the bones!), advertised items are missing like broccoli, lettuce, parsley, and cilantro appearing so wilted that they must have been on the shelves before the flyer went to print! No eggplant. No iodized salt.
Salt!!
We are not discussing exotic "metropolitan" Sumatran Kopi-Lowak coffee beans extracted from a civet's posterior. I refer to salt for the salt shaker, salt!
Certainly, there's $8.49 fancy pink Himalayan Sea Salt, but do you reckon there's a box of Sifto iodized salt to be located? Negative.
Apathetic staff prevail, all shrugging their shoulders, most attributing the issues to Galen W. and the head office for the continuous "short shipments." Where is Mr. Todd? As elusive as the table salt.
I wouldn't be criticizing this establishment if this were an isolated incident. This marks the fourth occurrence in the last six weeks where essential items have been absent from their flyers.
Had the round trip not amounted to 90 km, my discontent would not be as fervent.
Advising me to "come back later in the week" simply doesn't suffice.
Adding insult to injury, this all took place on a Thursday afternoon at 2:30 pm, not a Monday 5 minutes after opening when the shelves have been raided all weekend by summer vacationers populating the area's lakefronts. This was BEFORE the influx of weekend shoppers!
Foodland, the alternative grocery store in Haliburton - smaller and considerably more amiable, had the salt, the eggplant, and T-bone steaks at a 2 for 1 deal precisely cut to my preferred 1 3/4" thickness.
Next time, I shall attend Foodland first.
With any luck, Mr. Todd will rectify the situation and investigate his store to comprehend what I have (not) been observing.

What a great spot to get some grub! I was pleasantly surprised to find a little Joe Fresh corner, which came in handy when my little one managed to leave their undies at home. Popped into the store for a few bits yesterday. While the lady was scanning my items, I noticed a small tub of bulk olives scanned at $52.00! After a couple of attempts, they finally got it right by ringing it up with the black forest ham code for just over $5.00. It took three people to sort out the second $52.00 charge. As I was leaving, I decided to double-check my receipt and discovered that one garlic bulb had scanned at $22.00! Off to customer service I went. The lady wasn't sure about the scale, so another person weighed the garlic and it ended up being $8.00. When I questioned if that made any sense, she admitted she didn't buy raw garlic herself. I got a full refund and then headed to Foodland where I got a bulb of garlic for just 60 cents. Lesson learned - always check those receipts, folks! It seems like Independent has some issues with their system.
