Psychedelic Drugs Have The Potential to Ease Anxiety and PTSD
Psilocybin is one of the main compounds of magic mushroom being studied for its effects on anxiety. Magic mushrooms are well-known street drugs and are usually unrelated to treatment. But that can change. In a new article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, researchers are examining the therapeutic effects of these substances on people with psychiatric disorders ranging from addiction to depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
Studies suggest that some illicit drugs may have beneficial medical effects. It was a study that was pioneered in the 1950s and conducted in the 1970s but eventually made a swoosh due to the criticism of illegal drugs and the subsequent war on drugs. Evan Wood, a professor of medicine at the UBC, is one of the authors of this study. They quickly recognize some small scale of these clinical trials, but the authors of the study state that they are a starting point for the potential of these compounds to serve in a controlled environment.

Possibility of Psilocybin
Psilocybin, the main compound in magic mushrooms, is currently being studied for its effects on reducing end-of-life fear and treating tobacco addiction.
A recent study of tobacco addiction treatment showed a cure rate of 80% after 6 months, “this blows existing treatments out of the water,” Wood said.
Risk of Psilocybin
The authors of the report acknowledge that there are several adverse effects associated with these drugs, including the potential for the collapse of mental illness in people with a family history or suffering from psychosis or bipolar disorder.
Research participants are pre-screened to mitigate potential risks. Close patient monitoring is also required to reduce the risks associated with the actual administration of the drug.
What are the Future Prospects of Psilocybin?
“There is a hurdle we face in being able to do this kind of research … it breaks taboos, talks about these molecules and the need for this research, and tells scientific funders these. It comes from a recent study that is trying to encourage us to look for dramatic signs of hurdles, “Wood said.
